I have had a personal Twitter account for about five years. Therefore, I am very familiar with the multiple uses of Twitter and how exactly it works. From the short period I have used Twitter for EME 2040, I have been able to see Twitter in a new way. Rather than using it for entertainment and personal uses, I am able to keep up with current educational information. I am able to interact with my classmates by following them and liking or retweeting their tweets. An aspect of Twitter that is beneficial for students is the capability to direct message. Students can communicate with each other about the course in a way much more convenient than email. Students can also follow their instructors in order to see updates and reminders about the class. Since I am hoping to teach elementary age children, I am not sure that Twitter will be as useful for them as it is for adolescent students. However, a Twitter account could be used in order to deliver information to parents.
Students will be more inclined in school when they are knowledgeable about our digital world. As we all know, technology is a gateway for new information. Though the digital divide is a disadvantage at times, it is something that educators must work on in order to facilitate the success of his or her students. Many adults in general simply are not used to current tools, and therefore may not see them as beneficial for youth. At the same time, students can not help the era in which they are growing up. Many students may struggle while using technology in schools because they are not accustomed to having the same devices at home. As the digital world continues to expand, I'm sure this is a problem I may face in my future career. I think teachers should always keep this in mind during instruction and make it a goal to make sure everyone has a thorough understanding of the technology that is implemented in the classroom.
Ideally, I would like to teach third grade. I think my students would benefit from using interactive educational games, so I would absolutely implement this in my instruction. Especially at a young age, when students may have trouble staying focused in an educational environment, this could really help them learn in a fun, new way. In the chance that I teach an ELL or ESOL student, software regarding language or translations could help significantly, especially if the student is struggling to understand concepts or communicate. I would also try to include academic software that would allow students to try practice problems in order to better understand lessons. Students may be more engaged on a computer or tablet rather than a piece of paper. On the other hand, I feel like my students would be too young to deal with other technological aspects. One especially would be social media such as Twitter (even though social media can no doubt be very useful for older students).
